Flow meters for open channels and weirs

Open channel flow meters are applied where there is no pipe but an open pipe (channel). In open channel flow meters, the level measurement takes place in the restricted section where the flow increases in speed.
The maximum permissible speed varies according to the size of the channel from about 0.5m/s to 2m/s.

Open channel flow meters are usually used in "free flow" conditions with the water level flowing low enough not to exert a counter pressure against the high speed jet that passes through the narrow section of the channel.
An open channel flow meter can be used for medium and large flows even with dirty fluids or that have suspended solids.
